Polymicro silica core optical fibre improved for deep UV applications

Polymicro Technologies, a subsidiary of Molex, has announced improvements to its FDP optical fibre. The latest enhancements improve solarisation of the fibre in deep UV (ultra-violet) applications (190 to 325nm).

Polymicro silica core optical FDP fibre features ultra-high UV transmission and ultra-low UV solarisation, with superior radiation resistance. Operating down to 190nm with excellent deep UV solarisation resistance characteristics, FDP fibre has become a fibre of choice for applications in the deep UV region. The new FDP fibre delivers greater solarisation resistance to sustain transmission longer, while minimising damage to the fibre.

For applications in the deep UV region, the effects of high levels of UV radiation cause fibre and transmission deterioration. Fibres typically lose transmission after several hours. “Improved FDP fibre offers approximate 10 percent more light output after initial degradation compared with the previous version. This translates to better light emission and longer product life,” says Teodor Tichindelean, global product manager, Polymicro Technologies.

Delivering dimensional control and tight tolerances, Polymicro FDP optical fibres offer a range of options, including custom core sizes, coatings, buffers and assemblies. Molex and Polymicro facilities are ISO 9001, 13485 and 14001 certified.
