Motion-centric automation - drives, complete automation systems, engineering services and tools.

Techdrives ( is a division of Lenze selling drive products for machine production to the UK and Ireland. Enquiries from Ireland are generally traded through partner Torsion Dynamics, based in Malahide.

Servo-driven actuators designed to replace pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders
07 February, 2015
The new Linear-Mech SA range of servo-driven actuators fron Techdrives is designed to take the place of pneumatic and hydraulic cylinders by giving better performance, higher precision and substantial energy savings.
Torsionally soft shaft coupling for high misalignments
10 August, 2014
The Hexaflex range of shaft couplings, available in the UK through Techdrives, is a rugged design with high misalignment capacity. Suiting shafts from 15 to 95mm, rated torques are 100 to 2200Nm in six sizes. The Hexaflex design is based on two aluminium hubs connected by bolts through a reinforced rubber central element. The bolt connection means that the coupling is backlash-free and requires no lubrication or maintenance.
Geared motors offer wide speed range in same gearbox frame size
31 January, 2014
The Lenze g500 range of aluminium geared motors offers a wide output speed range, both for fixed speed mains supply and variable speed inverter control. The range covers powers from 60W up to 7.5kW with output torques up to 650Nm. As well as helical gearboxes, there are shaft mounted helicals with a hollow output shaft and helical bevels where the output is at 90 degrees to the input.
Linear actuators enter screw jack territory
08 December, 2013
The Servomech range of linear actuators sold in the UK by Techdrives has been extended with powerful new models for forces up to 350kN (35 tonnes). These are well into the performance realm of screw jacks so design engineers have the choice from the two technologies.
Smart AC motor allows wide range of running speeds to be freely set
19 November, 2013
The Lenze Smart Motor is not a variable speed drive but instead one that has the running speed freely set over a 5:1 speed range, from 500 to 2600 rev/min. This offers cost savings to machine builders, particularly in materials handling and conveyors, by reducing the number of variants of geared motors used. Instead of several drives with different gear ratios, a single model of Smart Motor can be used with different programmed speeds.
Drives for planetary gear motors in a stenting machine replaced in a day
23 September, 2013
Repeated overcurrent faults in a pair of frequency inverters used on a Montforts stenting machine were causing expensive loss of production for the the Portland Dyeing Company of Leek, Staffordshire. The situation was made more complex by the fact that the drives were set up with 87Hz technology and some of the machine manuals were lost. Lenze Systems Partner Cornfield Engineering Solutions stepped in and engineered up-to-date replacement drives which were up and running with only one day of downtime.
High speed I/O system suits real-time motion control
03 August, 2013
The Lenze I/O system 1000 is particularly fast with a bandwidth of 48 Mbit/s and a time stamp suiting high speed machinery and multi-axis motion. The range is compact with modules only 12.5mm wide. It is also extensive with six bus options and the availability of powerful modules that go far beyond simple analog and digital I/O. I/O stations with up to 64 modules can be connected directly to Lenze controllers or be installed remotely. Further advantages of easy handling reduce machine build times and costs.
Range of curved jaw shaft flexible couplings expanded
23 July, 2013
The GR range of curved jaw shaft couplings from Techdrives is now available with four larger sizes, making 13 sizes in all. The range has been expanded from shafts of 5 to 90mm up to 145mm. The simplicity of the design leads to highly economic selections.
Decentralised frequency inverter for wall mounting in larger plants
24 May, 2013
The cost of downtime is very high in large plants and here the Lenze 8400 Protec scores highly. This is a decentralised frequency inverter for wall mounting that reduces build costs, lowers operating costs and minimises downtime. It is designed for larger material handling plants such as automotive production lines and airport baggage handling systems.
Spring-applied brake for wet and dirty environments
06 May, 2013
Electromagnetic spring applied brakes are frequently found in difficult environments, for example cranes, wind turbines and car wash machinery. The new BFK470 brake from Intorq is designed to readily adapt to special and arduous conditions with standard options that are available and economic. With a torque range of 40 to 250Nm and operating voltages from 24 to 250V DC, the BFK470 suits wet and dirty conditions, also extreme ambient temperatures.
Faster laminating through machine innovation
04 April, 2013
With laminating machines running at line speeds of 20 to 25m/min, a new design capable of 120 or even 180m/min offers clear productivity advantage. Autobond of Heanor is meeting these high production speeds with its new laminating machines. Achieving this huge step-up in speed presented them with a challenge which they met in partnership with drive and automation company Lenze.
Double flux crossed electromagnetic clutches suit wet or dry conditions
23 March, 2013
The Mönninghoff 450 series of pole face clutches featuring a ′double flux crossed’ design achieves high torques and operates even in conditions where oil or water are present. Covering torques from 400 to 2000Nm, the 450 clutches are well-suited to mobile applications, particularly power-take-offs from diesel engines. Clutches are available in three sizes giving backlash free torque transmission with either static or dynamic engagement. Series 450 clutches are available in the UK from Techdrives.
Bevel geared motors challenge worms on energy efficiency
30 September, 2012
The Lenze GKR bevel geared motors are an ideal replacement for worm geared motors, offering massive savings in energy costs. The extra purchase cost is paid back in only a few months of continuous running as the efficiency im-proves from 50-70% up to 96%. These geared motors are available for motor powers from 60W to 7.5kW with output torques up to 450Nm and ratios up to i = 76
