Ukraine energy company extends long-term nuclear fuel contract

Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC : 15 April, 2014  (Company News)
Westinghouse Electric and the National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine (NNEGC Energoatom) have agreed a contract extension for fuel deliveries to Ukrainian nuclear power plants through 2020. The contract provides for the continuation of the long-standing partnership between the two companies in providing competitive and secure nuclear fuel supplies for Ukraine’s reactor fleet.
“We are very pleased to be a strategic partner with Energoatom and assisting them in diversifying their supply of fuel deliveries. The signing of this contract for Westinghouse VVER fuel design testifies to the quality of our fuel design and demonstrates that it has, in fact, operated without issue at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, as confirmed by extensive and recent joint Energoatom and Westinghouse inspections. This contract extension recognizes that Westinghouse fuel has been fully validated to be safely loaded and operated, even taking into account the performance problems of the competitor’s fuel. This agreement recognizing the excellent Westinghouse VVER fuel design performance will allow Energoatom to continue diversification of its fuel supply,” said Danny Roderick, Westinghouse president and CEO. “We expect that with continued superior results and competitive efficiency of our fuel design, Westinghouse will grow its share of the Ukrainian nuclear fuel market.”

Westinghouse originally signed a contract for nuclear fuel in 2008. The contract amendment will extend Westinghouse deliveries through 2020. Under terms of the contract executed with Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB, Westinghouse will produce the fuel at its fabrication facility in Västerås, Sweden. The Vasteras facility is one of the largest and most modern fuel plants in the world, serving every major market in Europe and South Africa.

Westinghouse is a single-source fuel provider for pressurized, boiling and advanced gas-cooled reactors worldwide and has 10 fuel manufacturing locations around the world, including two manufacturing sites in Europe: Westinghouse Springfields (Preston, Lancashire, UK) and Westinghouse Electric Sweden (Västerås, Sweden). Westinghouse is currently providing fuel for 147 nuclear power plants worldwide.

State enterprise National Nuclear Energy Generating Company (NNEGC Energoatom) was established in October, 1996. The company is the operator of all running nuclear power plants of Ukraine. Its main task is to increase electricity production and the NPPs’ capacity factor while ensuring continued improvement of the operational safety.
